Starting work on improving North End Road

After widespread consultation with residents, businesses and stallholders,  we’re starting work on improving North End Road.

We’re making the road safer by bringing all market bays up to pavement level. We’re repaving footways, planting new trees, installing new street lighting, creating charging points for electric vehicles and electricity for market traders, putting in additional seating and upgrading lampposts.

After being delayed by Covid, we’d planned to start the work this autumn. However, as Thames Water is repairing a sewer in the road at the moment, we’ve brought the work forward to minimise the number of times the road will be disrupted.

The improvements will start on Monday 28 June . I’m sorry for the short notice but hope you’ll agree it makes sense as Thames Water has already started work in the road with limited warning to the Council. The work will happen in stages – the market side of the road should be completed by next spring and the other side of the road by this Christmas.  The road will remain open for shopping throughout.

I apologise in advance for any inconvenience to you and hope you’ll like the results.  An artist’s impression of how the road will look is below.

We’re funding this with money we’ve negotiated from developers and with a successful bid we made to the Greater London Authority. We’re currently exploring funding for further improvements to the road. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Masella at the council or our contractor FM Conway – details below.

Best wishes,

Cllr Andrew Jones Cabinet Member for the Economy
